From chuckles to breakthroughs: Embracing change in the tutoring landscape
"Alexa, what is the square root of 44?" This question remains one of my fondest memories from my tutoring sessions over the past year. Noam, one of my students, caught me off guard with this unexpected query. And I couldn't help but burst out laughing at the clever use of on-demand math help – not a calculator, but Alexa.
I had already given Noam my standard no-calculator stance, preaching the value of critical thinking and problem-solving skills. But then Noam showed up equipped with something unexpected: the trusty, ever-helpful Alexa. My initial reaction was a mix of surprise and amusement.
Intrigued, I asked Noam to walk me through his problem-solving process. As he confidently explained the steps he took, I realized that the lesson was on me. It's only natural for parents and educators to worry about technology becoming a shortcut or a tool for cheating. Yet, Noam’s approach demonstrated that, when used thoughtfully, technology can actually enhance the educational experience. It was a humbling reminder for me to adapt to the times and focus on our ultimate goal: helping students grasp concepts and develop critical thinking skills.
Of course, I couldn't let the opportunity pass without explaining my initial shock to Noam. We discussed the importance of building a solid foundation of critical thinking skills, understanding the logic behind mathematical operations, and not solely relying on technology. Gradually, as we delved into the realms of geometry, we addressed any algebraic gaps that surfaced along the way.
Noam illustrated how technology, when used mindfully, can facilitate the learning process. It was as if he had taken my beloved "brain, paper, pencil" mantra and given it a modern twist. While I am known for my strict stance against calculators, Google searches, and anything that can hinder critical thinking, this encounter reminded me that technology can serve as an enhancer of learning. Noam showcased his ability to solve problems independently, understand the underlying concepts, and use technology as a facilitator, not a crutch.
So, if you were to join one of my online tutoring sessions today, you would likely witness me chuckling at the sight of a student consulting their digital sidekick. It's all part of the ever-evolving educational landscape, where the fusion of human intelligence and technological tools shapes the minds of tomorrow. After all, a little laughter and a touch of modernity can make the learning experience all the more memorable.
